I enlisted in the Royal Armoured Corps as a Junior Musician in 1963. In 1966, after two years training at Bovington and The Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall, I joined my Regiment the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. I then served as solo clarinet performing with them in Libya, Germany, Cyprus , Northern Ireland, Canada and many other countries in Europe and the UK. In 1983 I settled back in Dorset posted as a Warrant Officer Instructor, first to The Junior Leaders Regiment RAC and then the Army Junior School of Music.
Since leaving the Army in 1987 I have worked as a woodwind teacher and freelance musician performing on clarinet, saxophone and flute, with many different bands and Orchestras in the local area.
I joined the Dorset Music Service in 1997 as a peripatetic woodwind teacher for schools in Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth giving individual and group tuition to all ages.
I became Director of the Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2000 until leaving the Music Service in August 2011. I now teach privately in many of the same schools, giving the same tuition, directing groups and bands in and out of school hours. I still performs locally with Bands, Groups and Orchestras.
Over time I have built up a vast knowledge of all things woodwind from tuition to advice on instrument purchase, hire, repair and maintenance.
“We first met Laurie in 2006 when my son, and more recently my daughter, got involved with DYJO. Laurie has always been very encouraging to all the young people he is involved with and brings out the best in them, giving them all the opportunity to “shine”. He has been a true inspiration, a dedicated and talented musician and all who know him have great respect and fondness for him.”
Our daughter enjoyed four years of saxophone lessons with Mr Payne at middle school. On transfer to secondary school she preferred to continue to have lessons with Mr Payne privately rather than change to a different teacher. Over two years later she is very happy with her decision, and feels that Mr Payne is a very good Saxophone teacher.
Laurie is a tremendous teacher; he combines a warmth of personality with technical mastery of his instruments, alongside a wealth of knowledge and experience he loves to impart to students of all ages and abilities. He’s my go-to guy for woodwind, thoroughly decent and totally committed to quality in music. I can thoroughly recommend him!
